Stress is Stress

Sunday Brunch Club - Week 21

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is having a great weekend. This weekend, I had the opportunity to travel to Geneva, Ohio with Hettas to do a live podcast at the Women’s Decathlon World Championships. I got to interview the event founder, Lauren Kuntz, who is a world record holder in the double decathlon and indoor double heptathlon, and a 3x world champion. I also got to chat with athletes from all over the world about their approach to fueling while competing in multiple events.

This was a fun event to be a part of because it was a totally new side of track for me. Typically, women compete in the 7 event heptathlon, but this competition was unique in that participants competed in the 10 event decathlon that is typically reserved for men. Multi-sport athletes are truly incredible in terms of athleticism and fitness, and there are definitely some specific nutrition considerations when you’re competing in 10 events over the course of 2 days.

I really enjoyed getting to learn about something new, and talk to athletes from all over to learn why this event is special to them. I’m looking forward to publishing that podcast episode, which will air next Friday 8/22. In terms of training, this was a tricky weekend for me. Work started at 8am ET Saturday and Sunday, which would be 5am for me in LA. I didn’t want to run myself into the ground by getting up super early to train before work, that didn’t feel worth it to me. I was also out in the heat all day on Saturday, which can be super draining. Instead, I focused on fueling, hydrating and doing a lift in the air conditioned hotel gym. I’ll do a longer workout on Tuesday, and get back to my regularly scheduled Sunday long runs next week.

  • Science corner: Did you know that omega-3 supplementation can be used to help reduce symptoms of and speed up recovery from a concussion? Although concussions aren’t the most common injury in running, I still feel that things like this are helpful to know. Find out how it can help below ⬇️!

  • Food for thought: Many runners find themselves struggling to take rest days. Not just days off of running, but days where they are allowing themselves to relax and do nothing. I wanted to share my experience of learning how to rest, and why it has been so important for my overall health.
