Food Is Our Common Ground

Sunday Brunch Club - Week 25

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone had a great week. I finally started to feel better this week and was able to get back into training. An important lesson I’ve learned over the years is that even if you feel better, you shouldn’t just jump right back into training where you left off. As antsy as I’ve been to get back into it, I tried to take it easy and be smart with my ramp up. I only did one workout, and chose to just do a hilly run so I could get my heart rate up without having to run too hard.

Thankfully, I felt back to normal by the end of the week and I was able to do my long run with Nick this morning. We did 12 today, although a bit slower than we usually go, and I’m so ready to get back on track with my training! Over the next 6 weeks, we’ll be adding 2 miles each week to long runs until we peak at 20 miles. It’s crazy that there are only 6 long runs left between now and New York! It sounds close, but I know that’s plenty of time to feel prepared for race day.

Speaking of the New York City Marathon, I’m running as a charity runner for Trackgirlz, an incredible non-profit organization that works to provide girls access to mentorship and sport through track and field empowerment programs. To help meet my fundraising goal of $4500, I’m partnering with Hettas, a shoe designed for women. For every $50 you donate, you get 1 entry to win a Race Day Package, which includes a free pair of Hettas shoes, a t-shirt, a race day fueling strategy session with me, and more fun items from brands who support women in sport. If you’re interested in donating to enter the giveaway, can do so HERE. Even if you’re not able to donate $50, I so appreciate donations of any amount!

  • Science corner: Have you heard that sweeteners like maple syrup or coconut sugar are better for you than cane sugar? Today, I want to break down the science behind that and answer the question can your body actually tell the difference between sources of sugar?

  • Food for thought: Watching the World Championships taking place in Tokyo has me thinking about food experiences while traveling. I wanted to give my thoughts on the importance of allowing yourself to enjoy food as more than just fuel, but also as a way to experience life more fully.
